Registered Private Ambulance Technician
(360 Hours, Minimum Age 21yrs old)
The ambulance technician course has been designed to deliver high quality training to those individuals and organisations who work in the private and voluntary sector who require highly trained ambulance technicians and ambulance personnel but who are unable to meet the whole requirements of the NHS ambulance service training, clinical practice, and post training requirements.
The course would be ideal for organisations such as steel works and other large industrial sites where provision of mpre-hospital care over and above that provided by the standard HSE First Aid at Work Qualification is required. We are to provide training to private and voluntary ambulance services and providers as well as offering training course places to individuals who are either working for or who wish to work for private or voluntary ambulance service providers.
What is this course about?
The Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Training Agency Ambulance Technician Course is designed to equip candidates with the knowledge which shall enable them to use ambulance equipment, deal with casualties in various situations, and be able to work alone unsupervised to deliver treatment up to their level of training. You will have the knowledge to recognise when paramedic intervention should be requested.
The course will turn you into a valuable team member of your private ambulance organisation or voluntary ambulance service.
At the end of the course, you will have gained an increase your knowledge of anatomy and physiology that will enable you to have an understanding of what patients are experiencing, why they are experiencing this, and how you should treat them.

You will learn about the equipment carried on an ambulance and be trained to use it safely efficiently and effectively.
Ambulance technicians deal with medical emergencies, as well as complex non-emergency hospital admissions, discharges and transfers. They work as part of a rapid response unit, usually with support from an ambulance paramedic or emergency care assistant.
You could work for a private ambulance service or voluntary organisation or another response unit or event first aid provider.
With experience you may work as part of a major event provider as part of an ambulance crew.
As an ambulance technician (or emergency medical technician), you may be required to respond to accident and emergency calls, as well as a range of planned and unplanned non-emergency cases. You would work closely with a paramedic to assess, diagnose and treat patients at the scene and during the journey to hospital. You may use life saving skills as part of your day-to-day work.
When required to respond to an emergency call, you may have little warning of the exact circumstances you are about to face. Situations could range from helping someone back into bed after a fall, to a major traffic collision with several casualties.
Once at the scene of an accident or emergency, your duties would include:
- assessing the patients needs and taking a basic personal and medical history
- carrying out a risk assessment, identifying life and non-life threatening conditions
- interpreting observations (weight, breathlessness, fatigue, oedema/fluid retention).
- assessing a patient's condition
- recording base line observations such as Pulse, Respirations, Blood Pressure and undertaking a basic ECG.
- deciding on the appropriate course of action based on clinical need
- making quick decisions about moving the patient
- using advanced life support techniques, such as defibrillation to resuscitate patients
- dressing wounds and applying splints.
You would also decide which type of pre-hospital emergency care was most suitable and carry out certain treatments, for example:
- managing airways and supporting breathing
- controlling bleeding whilst maintaining circulation with cardio pulmonary resuscitation
- using semi-automatic defibrillators to steady irregular heart beats
- applying special splints and dressing wounds.
You may be required to assist a State Registered Paramedic to:

- carrying out certain surgical procedures, such as intubation (inserting a breathing tube into the throat)
- using advanced airway devices to keep the airway open
- using intravenous fluid therapy and drug therapy
- administering medicines and giving injections
Your duties would also include making routine checks on your vehicle and cleaning, storing and checking ambulance equipment, cleaning equipment and your vehicle.
Throughout the working day you would need to keep in regular contact with your ambulance dispatch centre and keep them informed of your location, availability and capabilities, as you may be required to assist at an incident by the NHS Ambulance Service.
