First Aid Volunteers

Our volunteers are trained to a high standard in First Aid, enabling them to treat all sorts of injuries from simple Cuts and Bruises to Heart Attacks and Cardiac Arrest. Their first aid knowledge and skills are used to treat casualties at a wide range of events. Our volunteers work as part of a team of providing basic and advanced care including, where required  transportation to hospital.

What does it involve?

Training & Probation

You do not require any previous First Aid Knowledge or Experience. Our training staff will ensure you are equipped with the knowledge and skills to undertake your role.

As a voluntary first aider, you will be required to attend training evenings. These training evenings are held weekly and usually constitute a period of training lasting two hours per week. We understand that due to work patterns, volunteers will not be able to attend every weekly training session. Your attendance commitment can be discussed with your officer for your first aid unit to ensure you gain the required training.

Once you have met the requirements of the basic training, you can attend public events as a trainee working under supervision of more experienced staff who will help guide you in your probationary period.

Trained First Aider Role

As a trained First Aider, your knowledge and skills will enable you to be able to treat casualties who have sought help. The type of casualties range across the whole

spectrum ranging from small cuts and bruises to more serious conditions such as Heart Attacks, Stroke and Cardiac Arrest.

You may work as part of a first aid team, be the team leader, run the first aid post, operate more advanced equipment, be a part of an ambulance crew, operate the command and control etc.

Volunteer First Aid Trainer

We train many people in first aid every year and volunteer trainers play a vital role in achieving this.

What does it involve?

Commitment

One of the most important attributes to our Voluntary First Aid Trainers is their commitment. Our courses vary in length from a few hours to several days. It is beneficial for course candidates to have the same trainer for the duration of their course and we would therefore expect volunteer trainers to commit to undertaking a complete course where possible.

Role

As a Volunteer First Aid Trainer, your main role will be to conduct first aid courses for other volunteers within the organisation as well as run courses for the community.

Training

You don't need any previous experience, our training will equip you with the knowledge and skills required to undertake your role.

University students volunteering with PHECTA

If you are attending university in the UK and you are interested in First Aid, Paramedic Sciences, Nursing, Physiotherapy or Medicine, then why not contact us and join our undergraduate groups.

As a member of the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Training Agency Undergraduate Group, you will be able to learn and enhance your first aid skills, assist in research projects, interact with other health care professionals and assist at events.

As a student in PHECTA, there are many opportunities available to you such as first aid, socialising, training and volunteering:

First aid

PHECTA UG Groups can provide first aid cover for their universities and the wider community. There is the opportunity to work alongside other volunteers helping save lives or providing cover at events.

Socialising

PHECTA UG Groups meet regularly in and out of term time. They will have regular social events to meet all tastes. This provides a great opportunity to meet new people both within the organisation and outside it. As most students at university live away from home, LINKS offers a varied social life with members soon feeling part of the organisation.  Groups often have annual balls and teambuilding weekends that allow members to relax and forget about their studies for a few days.

Training

PHECTA UG Groups will train regularly, normally once a week during term time, teaching members new skills, helping them to develop their first aid. The more experienced members have the opportunity to teach the newer members and get the reward of helping them in their development within the organisation.

Volunteering

PHECTA UG Groups offer many opportunities to volunteer in your local community. Whether this is through providing first aid services, training in first aid or youth work - there is something for everyone. PHECTA UG Groups are student run, so there are opportunities for members to take leading roles in the management of the group. There are plentiful opportunities to enhance your CV, working with health professionals.

Every student will have been told that university is more than a degree, it's an education.  PHECTA UG Groups allows for this with members choosing how much time they want to give and how / when they want to spend this time.
