This course has been delivered now for over two years. It provides a high level of training to those required to provide pre-hospital emergency care to those involved in sport such as rugby and football. Those attending his course are trained by state registered paramedics, learning and applying skills including "Cervical Spine Immobilisation", application of cervical collars, use of spinal boards, frac immobilisers etc.
 
This course has been designed to ensure that player safety is of the highest standard as it ensures pitch side medical staff are able to safely apply the skills required to immobilise and remove players to safety as well as ensuring that they are able to deliver resuscitation, understand the requirements of Hydration etc.
 
There is growing demand for this course across the country and is an equivalent standard to that of the RFU Pitch-Side immediate trauma care course, but at less than a third of the price.

Who delivers the Training?
 
State Registered Paramedics and State Registered Physiotherapists with a proven track record in pre-hospital care together with experience of working with both rugby union and rugby league clubs at junior and senior level from club rugby, premiership rugby, and international rugby.
 

Where does the training take place?

 

We can arrange to attend your club house to deliver the two day Sports Injuries Course. We will require access to the sports field for day 2 of the course, where candidates apply the techniques on the sports field regardless of weather conditions!.

 

Alternatively, we can arrange to run the course at one of our venues.

 

 

How long is the course?

 

The course consists of 12 contact training hours, usually run over two days or where this is not convenient for the organisation requiring the training, we can run the course over several evenings or mornings including weekends, to ensure at least 12 contact hours are met.

On-Going Training

 

We recommend that an annual update course is undertaken to ensure maintenance of skill acquisition and retention. The annual update is just 4 hours duration to ensure the practical skills learnt on the initial course are maintained and applied safely and efficiently.

 

Every Third year, students should attend a complete two-day sports injuries course where theory and practical skills are re-enforced. Students who have attended the annual update training are only required to attend the second day of the two day sports injuries course when required to re-train.

Course Aim

 

To provide the knowledge required to identify life threatening and non-life threatening injuries / conditions together with the skills required to effectively manage an injured sports competitor.

 

 

  

 

 

Who should attend the course:

 

 

 

Anyone responsible in a sports organisation or sports facility

 

where competitors, spectators and visitors are i attendance. This includes team first aiders, physiotherapy and nursing staff, team managers, coaches, club officials. and those with a duty of care towards sports competitors and spectators.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sporting Injuries can be life threatening,

Course Objectives

 

Candidates should be able to:

 

  • Identify the difference between a serious and non serious injury
  • Demonstrate the correct treatment of an injured competitor
  • Identify the need for further medical treatment
  • Airway management in the unconscious casualty
  • Successfully apply correct resuscitation techniques 
  • Identify and manage a suspected spinal injury
  • Identify and Treat Asthma
 

The course covers important issues such as:

 

  • Correct use Cervical Collars, Long Spinal Boards, Frac  

              Immobilisers.

  • How to Move & Handle injured competitors safely
  • Drugs in Sport
  • Strapping and soft tissue injuries
  • Health & Safety issues
  • Record Keeping
  • Hygiene in Sports First Aid
  • Hydration
  • Head & Neck Injuries
  • Resuscitation
  • Automated External Defibrillation

 

 

 

(Treherbert & Treorchy RFC on the Introduction to the various common Spinal Boards by State Registered Paramedics)

 

(Usually arch enemies on the field, Paramedics train both Treherbert & Treorchy RFC to immobilise an injured player)

 

The candidates practice in the classroom prior to training on a field of play where you will learn:

 

  • Correct methods for dealing with a suspected Head & Neck

              Injury

  • How to deal with injured players laying face down
  • How to immobilise a player using a long spinal board
  • Correct use and application of cervical collars
  • How to work as a team to deal with casualties
  • Methods for moving and handling casualties

 

The Sports Injury Course is aimed at anyone with or without first aid or medical training, who are responsible for dealing with sporting injuries prior to medical treatment. The course is designed to ensure each participant understands the requirement to undertake a systematic  approach to the assessment of injured competitors, enabling rapid identification of life  threatening conditions together with the immediate treatment of non-serious emergencies.

 This course is therefore ideal for anyone who deals with either amateur or professional sporting events  

 

The course is ideal for the hospital based / non trauma based clinicians such as physiotherapists, nurses and doctors who do not usually deal with trauma in its immediate aftermath who may wish to home their existing skills into the trauma setting.

The course is also ideal for those who have first aid at work qualifications that

are not easily transferable to the sports field.

 

The course has been designed by Professionals for those providing First Aid Cover at every level, with 'Hands On' Training to ensure sports participants are cared for when injured.

This is a one day annual up-date for those candidates who have previously successfully completed the Sports Injury Course.

 

Training is provided by experienced Paramedics, Nurses, Physiotherapists and Experienced First Aiders all of whom have experience in the sports medicine environment.

 Course Cost

 

2-Day initial course:

 

The course is usually provided at a charge of £250.00 per candidate.

 

However, we are currently able to deliver courses at a discounted price of £150.00 per student. (Group discounts available for full courses)

 

We are able to accommodate up to 18 students maximum per course.

 

1-Day refresher:

 

£90.00 per person

 

Group discounts are available.

 

 

 

How to book a Place on a Course

 

This course is most popular in the closed season (end of May to the end of September). Outside of this period, we run courses when there is sufficient candidates to make the course viable.

 

If you would like to attend this course, please submit your details via e-mail. We shall acknowledge receipt of your request and place you on a standby reserve list.

 

When we have sufficient numbers interested in training, we will contact you and offer you a place on a course.

 

These in-season courses shall be run on a Saturday and Sunday unless a block course booking is received from an individual organisation for a complete course.
